What Really Happens to Your Skin When You Wash?
We wash our bodies every day.
But have you ever wondered what actually happens to your skin when you use soap or body wash?
You may have heard:
“Natural soap is better for your skin.”
or
“Synthetic surfactants are bad for your skin.”
But the truth is a little more complicated.
When choosing a cleanser, what matters is not simply whether it is “natural” or “synthetic.”
What matters is how the cleansing ingredients interact with your skin, your skin’s pH, its natural oils, and its microbiome.

What Is “Soap Base”?
Many traditional bar soaps contain an ingredient listed as “soap base” or “sodium/potassium soap.”
Traditional soap is generally made by reacting oils or fats with an alkaline substance through a process called saponification.
The result is a soap made from fatty acid salts.
Because of the way it is made, traditional soap is generally alkaline, often with a pH around 8.5–11.
But healthy human skin is naturally slightly acidic, usually around pH 4–6.
So there is a fundamental difference:
Healthy skin → slightly acidic
Traditional soap → alkaline
And that difference matters.

What Happens to Your Skin While You Wash?
The outermost layer of your skin is called the stratum corneum.
It acts as an important protective barrier.
It contains corneocytes surrounded by lipids such as ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids. These structures help keep moisture inside the skin and protect it from the outside environment.
Your skin surface also contains sebum, sweat, natural moisturizing factors (NMFs), and microorganisms that make up your skin microbiome.
Cleansers contain surfactants that help remove substances that water alone cannot easily wash away, particularly oils and dirt.
This is why surfactants are so useful.
But there is an important question:
Are we removing only what we don't need—or are we also removing things our skin needs?
If cleansing is too aggressive, it can remove not only dirt but also some of the lipids and natural moisturizing components that help maintain the skin barrier.
What Happens When the Skin Becomes More Alkaline?
This is where traditional soap becomes particularly interesting.
When alkaline soap is used, the pH of the skin surface temporarily shifts toward the alkaline side.
This change can affect the structure and chemistry of the stratum corneum.
Under alkaline conditions, certain proteins in the outer layer of the skin can swell and change their properties.
The ionization state of fatty acids can also change.
In simple terms:
Alkaline environment → changes in the electrical state of certain molecules → changes in the behavior and structure of the skin barrier
These changes can contribute to increased dryness and a feeling of tightness, particularly when cleansing is frequent or aggressive.
This is one reason why some people feel that their skin becomes tight, dry, or rough after using traditional soap.

Are Synthetic Surfactants Bad for Your Skin?
Not necessarily.
This is one of the biggest misconceptions about body wash.
“Synthetic surfactant” does not automatically mean “bad for your skin.”
There are many different types of surfactants, including:

Anionic surfactants

Amphoteric surfactants

Nonionic surfactants
They do not all behave the same way.
Some surfactants can be relatively harsh, while others are designed to be much milder.
Modern body washes can also be formulated to have a pH closer to that of healthy skin.
These products are sometimes called syndets, short for synthetic detergents.
Unlike traditional alkaline soap, many syndet formulations can be adjusted to a mildly acidic or near-neutral pH.
So the important question isn't simply:
“Is it soap or synthetic?”
A better question is:
“What cleansing ingredients does it contain, and what is the pH of the finished product?”
Your Skin Has Its Own Microbiome
There is another important part of the story:
Your skin is not sterile.
Thousands of microorganisms live on your skin.
These microorganisms are part of the skin's natural ecosystem and can interact with the skin barrier and immune system.
The slightly acidic environment of healthy skin is also closely connected to this ecosystem.
When the skin becomes more alkaline, the balance and behavior of microorganisms on the skin can change.
This is why completely eliminating every microorganism from your skin is not necessarily the goal.
Healthy skin isn't supposed to be sterile.
Instead, the goal is to:
remove unwanted dirt and excess substances while disturbing the skin's natural environment as little as possible.

Your Skin Can Restore Its Natural pH
So, if soap temporarily makes the skin more alkaline, does the skin stay that way?
Fortunately, no.
Healthy skin has its own buffering and recovery mechanisms.
After washing, the skin gradually moves back toward its naturally acidic state.
Sweat, sebum, components within the stratum corneum, and other physiological processes all contribute to this recovery.
In other words:
Washing → temporary rise in pH → gradual return toward acidity
This is one of the remarkable abilities of healthy skin.
Using a traditional soap occasionally does not mean that your skin will suddenly become damaged.
The bigger concern can be repeated, frequent, or excessive disruption of the skin barrier and its acidic environment.
Does This Recovery Ability Change With Age?
This is particularly interesting as we get older.
As we age, the skin undergoes many changes.
The amount and composition of skin lipids can change. The barrier function can become less efficient, and changes in skin surface pH can also occur.
Older skin tends to have a higher surface pH than younger skin, and this can be associated with changes in barrier function.
This may explain why something that worked perfectly well when you were younger can suddenly feel different later in life.
You may notice:

A greater need for moisturizer
There is no exact age at which the skin suddenly “loses” its ability to restore its pH.
However, the skin's ability to maintain its barrier and recover from environmental stress can change gradually with age.
For people in their 50s and beyond, paying attention to how the skin responds to cleansing can therefore become increasingly important.

So, Which Is Better: Bar Soap or Body Wash?
The answer is:
It depends on the formula—and on your skin.
It's too simplistic to say:
“Bar soap is bad.”
And it is equally inaccurate to say:
“Natural soap is always better.”
If your skin is healthy and traditional soap does not cause dryness or irritation, you may be perfectly comfortable using it.
However, if your skin is:

Dry

Easily irritated

Tight after bathing

Sensitive
-
More fragile with age

Frequently exposed to hot water or frequent washing
then a mild cleanser with a skin-friendly pH may be a better choice.
The goal is not to remove everything from your skin.
The goal is to clean the skin while preserving as much of its natural protective environment as possible.
Strong Cleansing Doesn't Always Mean Better Cleansing
When it comes to body care, we often focus on one thing:
“How thoroughly does it clean?”
But perhaps we should ask another question:
“How much does it preserve while it cleans?”
Your skin needs its lipids.
It needs moisture.
It has a microbiome.
It has a naturally acidic environment.
And it has its own ability to repair and restore itself.
Good cleansing isn't about fighting your skin.
It's about working with it.
Natural vs. Synthetic: The Real Question
One final point is important.
Natural does not automatically mean gentle, and synthetic does not automatically mean harsh.
Traditional soap itself is a chemical product created through a chemical reaction.
And “synthetic surfactant” covers a very large range of ingredients with very different properties.
The effect on your skin depends on factors such as:
the type of surfactant, its concentration, the formulation, the pH, how often you wash, water temperature, and your individual skin condition.
So instead of asking:
“Is this natural or synthetic?”
perhaps the better question is:
“Is this cleanser appropriate for my skin?”
Because healthy skin isn't about removing everything.
It's about maintaining the right balance.
